Top 10 must-stay Best Backwater Resorts in Kerala

Kerala’s backwaters go beyond “serene beauty”—they’re shaped by everyday life.
With 900+ km of waterways, Kollam and Kuttanad offer some of the – backwater resorts in Kerala, ideal for lower-traffic stays.

The right resort matters. Some properties have water you can barely see from your room. Some charge five-star prices for a view of someone else’s roof. The ten on this list are among the most reliable Lake View Resorts in Kerala—verified, honest, no fluff.

Fragrant Nature Kollam is first—not because it’s the most famous, but because it balances view, space, and experience better than most options right now.

1. Fragrant Nature Kollam — Ashtamudi Lake, Kollam

Kollam often gets skipped, but it shouldn’t. Most head north from Kochi, but Kollam offers a calmer, low-traffic stay.

At Fragrant Nature Kollam, the lake is right in front, with wide balconies for relaxing views. The infinity pool blends into the lake, especially in the evening.

The Ayurveda programme is well-run with clear multi-day programmes, with trained therapists and proper multi-day plans. There’s also yoga, authentic Kerala food, and dedicated event spaces that don’t disturb other guests.

Fragrant Nature has three properties—Cochin, Munnar, and Kollam. The Kollam one is the backwater stay and the most distinctive of the three.

What’s at the resort:

  • Lake View Villas with wide balconies directly facing Ashtamudi
  • Infinity pool along the waterfront
  • Ayurvedic treatments: Sessions and multi-day plans
  • Shikara rides and sunset cruises
  • Yoga retreat programmes
  • Restaurant with Kerala and continental menu

Getting there: ~3 hours from Cochin Airport; hiring a car with a driver is easiest.

2. Kumarakom Lake Resort — Kumarakom, Kottayam

25-acre stay on Vembanad Lake with heritage villas.

Ettukettu is a traditional eight-sided mansion restaurant. Two open courtyards make dining an experience. Thattukada tea stall, water sports, and authentic Ayurveda at the Ayurmana spa. Short boat ride to the bird sanctuary—expensive, but worth it.

  • Villas from original antique Kerala wooden houses
  • Ayurmana Ayurvedic Spa
  • Multiple pools including private villa pools
  • Water sports: skiing, banana boat, speedboat
  • Boat ride to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

3. The Zuri Kumarakom — Kumarakom

Large-scale resort, but the experiences are paced well rather than feeling crowded.

A five-star stay on Vembanad’s shore with one of the largest lagoon pools—bamboo rafting is better than it sounds. Pool villas have private plunge pools. The Ayurveda spa is well-managed, with clearly organised programmes, not a massage menu dressed up with Ayurvedic branding.

It works better than it should. 82 suites, all with balconies over the water, all facing the final stretch of the Nehru Snake Boat Race.

The Sarangi restaurant handles Indian and international menus both. The barbecue centre is the place for seafood. For groups and corporates, the conference setup here is proper — not a folding table in a banquet hall.

  • Views of the Nehru Snake Boat Race finish
  • Sarangi restaurant — Indian and international
  • Seafood barbecue centre
  • Pool, gym, spa, conference facilities

Things to Know Before You Book

  • When to visit: October–March. Peak Nov–Feb—book early. Monsoon: June–September. The landscape looks incredible but boat activities get restricted and roads slow down.
  • Getting there: ~1.5 hrs to Kumarakom, ~2 hrs to Alleppey, ~3 hrs to Kollam. Hiring a driver is easiest. The drives through Kerala are worth doing properly.
  • Houseboat question: Book a day trip through your resort rather than doing a separate overnight houseboat booking. You get the experience, keep your room, and eat better.
  • Room tip: Ask for a water-facing room when you book — not when you arrive. Those rooms go first and the front desk cannot always help you at check-in.

Last Thing

The backwaters don’t ask for much from you. Show up, slow down, stop checking your phone for a few hours. The water does the rest.

Fragrant Nature Kollam for a quieter stay, Kumarakom Lake Resort for five-star heritage, and Coconut Lagoon for a boat-access experience. To arrive by boat and disconnect, go with Coconut Lagoon by CGH Earth.

All ten are worth it.

Pick what fits your trip and book early.
